Mulberry House School
Mulberry House School is an elementary school in East London. The lighting scheme was designed for an extension of the school that includes an outdoor patio on the roof, and a multifunctional classroom. The conceptual proposal was designed as part of the Advanced Lighting Design class at UCL.
The sense of movement created by the architecture of the building is what drives the proposal of the lighting design. On the outside the lighting reveals the architectural details in an orderly manner, where the light guides the view towards the top creating a focal point on the roof. Also, it reinforces the sensation of movement through a difference in perceived brightness of each architectural level.
On the roof, daylight will be controlled by carefully designed perforations that create variations of light patterns throughout the day, illustrating the movement of sunlight. Inside, the installation was designed to provide artificial light depending on the intensity of natural light in the space. The distribution of the luminaires reflects the architectural movement of the building.
The movement inside the classroom is evident as it changes physically according to the needs of the user. It is designed as a flexible space that can be organized in four different ways. When the space moves, the lighting must also move.
The lighting for the classroom creates a uniform distribution of light that allows you to divide the space and still provide sufficient lighting for each arrangement. Provides enough lighting for good facial recognition and colour rendering. The light scheme is controlled depending on the intensity of natural light available and the movement of its users to allow the possibility of changing the lights according to the spatial arrangement.
